There has been a surge of memes across various social media platforms for the past few weeks, all centered around Jack Black’s performance as Steve in the Minecraft Movie.
I believe there was intentionality in the editing of the trailers to lead to this conclusion, but why would Warner Bros choose to meme their lead actor? I have a few theories.
Initially, Jack Black was not expected to play the character Steve in this movie. For reasons that remain unclear, he was cast in the lead role late in the production process. Based on my production experience, I suspect that costs started to rise, which may have necessitated some changes. This could have involved rewriting or reshooting certain scenes, which might explain why Jack Black was promoted from a supporting role to a lead role.
Black stayed true to form, embodying his character as “Jack Black in Minecraft.” He was over the top, constantly quipping, and loving every moment of it. One of the best selling points of Jack Black is his obvious enthusiasm for his work. There have been reports of how Jack Black has been putting thousands of hours into playing Minecraft to most fully appreciate the game, with the latest report being that he has a favorite ore to mine for. The release of the first trailer revealed some loose storyline elements. However, what garnered the most attention was the “Marvelized” dialogue and moments. Many influencers and movie fan accounts discussed these moments, highlighting the potential for recurring gags seen in recent films. I think that this memeifying of Jack Black has helped the awareness and public perception of the Minecraft movie. Whether intentional or not, Jack Black took the internet by storm with such effortlessness, and Warner Bros will get to reap the benefits.
Another idea is that this was Jack Black’s idea. He is unusually aware of how he is percieved as an actor, so I would not be surprised if he either suggested or is simply acting this way to get memed.
Regardless of the reasons, people are constantly talking about this upcoming movie. It releases April 4th, just a little over a week from the writing of this article. My prediction is that the movie will perform well regardless of the quality of the movie, due mostly if not entirely to Jack Black’s antics.
